The case was revealed by Rep\u00f3rter Brasil in the reporting series Kinja: The Indigenous People Afraid of the River, produced in partnership with the Rainforest Investigations Network at the Pulitzer Center.<\/p>\n<p>Minera\u00e7\u00e3o Taboca has been operating in the region for more than 40 years and is Brazil\u2019s largest producer of refined tin, a metal used in the manufacture of metal alloys. Water quality parameters, including turbidity, remain within the limits established by the applicable legislation,\u201d the company said in a statement to Rep\u00f3rter Brasil (read the full statement).<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the pollution records from February, Taboca said it sent technicians to inspect the area. \u201cThe information was formally reported to Indigenous representatives, at which time no anomalies were identified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the Federal Prosecutor\u2019s Office investigation, the mining company said in March that \u201cthere is no evidence indicating a causal nexus\u201d between the contamination identified in previous years and its operations. We want this to get better,\u201d Sanapyty told <strong>Rep\u00f3rter Brasil<\/strong>. The Indigenous people have avoided drinking water from the river and even bathing in the Alala\u00fa. They have also reported changes in the appearance of the fish, which they say have become \u201cthinner, paler and more yellowish.\u201d \u201cThe fish will disappear.
